Background to the collection

The NHS 111 First programme encourages patients to call NHS 111 for triage before attending A&E services.

The information collected is used alongside data available from other sources, including Emergency Departments, to monitor and evaluate the NHS 111 First programme. 

This collection monitors the impact of NHS 111 First by looking at changes to flows of patients through the Urgent and Emergency Care (UEC) system and whether using NHS 111 as the default triage mechanism for UEC patients results in more efficient use of NHS resources.  It also helps to identify where changes are needed to optimise benefits.
