Venous Thromboembolism (VTE) Risk Assessment Collection

The data collection was first made mandatory from June 2010, and data has been published quarterly from the first full quarter's data (July to September 2010).

VTE collection paused

We are pausing the collection and publication of this data to release NHS capacity to support the response to coronavirus (COVID-19). Find more information including a full list of collections and releases affected on the NHS England website under the heading COVID-19 and the production of statistics.

How do I submit the data?

Submit data through the Strategic Data Collection Service (SDCS).

Frequency: Quarterly

Background to the collection

The data collection was first made mandatory from June 2010 and data has been published quarterly from the first full quarter’s data (July to September 2010). From April 2019 there will be a change to the data collection to include 16 and 17 year old patients.

The data collection asks for 3 items of information:

  1. Number of patients aged 16 and over admitted in the month who have been risk assessed for VTE on admission to hospital using the criteria in a National VTE Risk Assessment Tool.
  2. Total number of patients aged 16 and over admitted in the month.
  3. Calculated from (1) and (2), the percentage of patients aged 16 and over, admitted within the month assessed for risk of VTE on admission.
