GP data collections

The General Practice Extraction Service (GPES) collects information for a wide range of purposes, including providing GP payments. It works with the Calculating Quality Reporting Service (CQRS) and GP clinical systems as part of the GP Collections service.

This page provides a list of current GPES extractions, which have been assured by the Data Alliance Partnership Board or one of its predecessor organisations (SCCI or the DCB). Alongside the description, we have provided a link to:

  • an Assurance Certificate for items approved before June 2021
  • other documents that give more information about the extract. This may include any Data Provision Notice issued by NHS England under section 259 of the Health and Social Care Act 2012.

General Practice (GP) Collections

We collect information from GPs across the UK for use in planning, research and generating payments.

General Practice Extraction Service

The General Practice Extraction Service (GPES) collects information for a wide range of purposes, including providing GP payments. It works with the Calculating Quality Reporting Service (CQRS) and GP clinical systems as part of the GP Collections service.


Assurance of GPES extractions

Since 1 April 2021 the DAPB has been responsible for the governance of all requests made to NHS England's General Practice Extraction Service (GPES).

Requests made to GPES were previously overseen by:

  • the Data Coordination Board (DCB) from April 2017 to March 2021
  • DCB's predecessor, SCCI, from July 2015 to 31 March 2017
  • the Independent Advisory Group (IAG), from May 2012 to 30 June 2015.  You can view IAG documents on the archived IAG web pages

This data extraction supports direct payment to GP practices under the General Medical Service (GMS) contract and provides management information to NHS England and NHS Improvement regarding the monthly uptake of the 6-in-1 infant vaccinations and the two booster vaccines.

Aggregate data is extracted on a monthly basis from GP systems via NHS Digital’s General Practice Extraction Service (GPES).

GPES: Childhood Seasonal Influenza Vaccination Programme

NHS England has asked NHS Digital to collect data on the childhood seasonal influenza vaccination programme. NHS Digital's General Practice Extraction Service (GPES) will extract the aggregated data at GP practice level on a monthly basis.

GPES: Core Contract

Release number: Amd 7/2023

All GP practices in England will be offered the choice to participate in this service and NHS England will use the data to monitor GP practice activity associated with a number of separate contractual requirements - Named GP, the Identification and Management of Patients with Frailty, dementia and alcohol consumption - for commissioning and planning purposes.

Formerly the General Medical Services (GMS)/ Personal Medical Services (PMS) core contract data collection, this collection has been merged with DCB2090-2190 Alcohol Related Risk Reduction and DAPB2090-2058 Dementia Data, allowing their retirement as standalone extractions.

This extract incorporates aspects of the previous SCCI2090-2189 Named Accountable GP 2016-17 extraction, as well as new information on the identification and management of patients with frailty (at an aggregate level).

DAPB2090-3114 GPES: COVID-19 At Risk Patients data collection

Release number: Amd 58/2022

This data extraction supports vital planning and research into coronavirus (COVID19). Data collected covers patients registered at General Practices who may be clinically extremely vulnerable if they contract COVID-19 or at moderate or high risk of complications from flu or COVID-19. The scope has been revised for 2022 and includes the conditions - Downs syndrome, cancers, haematological disease, renal disease, liver disease, immunosuppression, transplants and neurological disease.

Patient-level data is extracted from General Practices via NHS Digital’s General Practice Extraction Service (GPES) on a weekly basis. The revised data collection will feed a variety of COVID-19 related cohorting programmes including covid therapeutics and vaccination programmes.

 

DAPB2090-4087 GPES: COVID-19 At Risk Patients data collection detained estate

Release number: Amd 65/2022

The objective of this collection is to support identification of patients registered as part of the criminal justice secure and detained estate, in England, who are more at risk of getting seriously ill with COVID-19 and who may be suitable for treatment if they become COVID-19 positive or suitable for a COVID vaccination if in a clinically high-risk group. A single GP system supplier operates in this setting (TPP).

 

DAPB2090-2175 GPES: General Practice to Diabetic Retinopathy Screening (GP2DRS)

​This data extraction identifies patients that are registered with a general practice, are 12 years of age or older, have a current diagnosis of diabetes, who may be at increased risk of diabetic retinopathy. It will also identify patients who were in the cohort of diabetes patients in the last extract but who are no longer in the cohort of diabetes patients.

Patients who have withheld consent for the extraction of demographic information are excluded. The GPES data extraction will also look to extract certain clinical information about the patients identified above but only where explicit consent is recorded in a patient's record.

DCB2090-2178 GPES: Hepatitis B (new born) Babies Vaccination Programme

NHS England has asked NHS Digital to collect monthly, aggregated immunisation data on the Hepatitis B (new born) Babies vaccination programme via NHS Digital’s General Practice Extraction Service (GPES).

The data is needed to allow NHS England to monitor and pay GP practices for their activity associated with this programme.

This collection is also known as 'Hepatitis B at risk (newborn)'. 

Note that this data collection was previously run on the Calculating Quality Reporting Service (CQRS) platform.

GPES: Indicators no longer in the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) (INLIQ)

 

Release number: Amd 3/2023

NHS England collects data on those indicators no longer included in the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) on an annual basis. All GP practices in England will be offered the choice to participate in this service.

The data is needed to monitor GP practice activity associated with indicators no longer in QOF.

NHS England has asked NHS Digital to collect data on the learning disabilities health check scheme. NHS Digital's General Practice Extraction Service (GPES) will extract the aggregated data at GP practice level on a monthly basis.

GPES: Learning Disabilities Data

Release number: Amd 61/2021

NHS England has asked NHS Digital to collect aggregated data for patients with a recording of a potential or actual learning disability. Data will be used to support analysis of services and outcomes for this patient group.

NHS Digital's General Practice Extraction Service (GPES) will extract the aggregated data on an annual basis.

Note that this collection was formerly known as GPES: Learning Disabilities Observatory (LDO).

GPES: Meningococcal ACWY Vaccination Programme

NHS England has asked NHS Digital to collect data on the Meningococcal ACWY vaccination programme. NHS Digital's General Practice Extraction Service (GPES) will extract the aggregated data on a monthly basis.

The data will be used to support direct payment to GP practices for participation in this vaccination programme and will provide management information to NHS England to support monitoring at a practice level.

GPES: Meningococcal B Vaccination Programme

NHS England has asked NHS Digital to collect data on the Meningococcal B vaccination programme. NHS Digital's General Practice Extraction Service (GPES) will extract the aggregate data on a monthly basis.

The data will be used to support direct payment to GP practices for participation in this vaccination programme and provide management information to NHS England to support monitoring at GP practice level.

GPES: Network Contract Direct Enhanced Service (DES) Patient Level Extract

NHS England has asked NHS Digital to collect data which will enable the construction of indicators which will support NHS England (NHSE) in meeting payments to providers of primary medical services. This allows for incentivised improvements in patient outcomes to be monitored, providing information to practices and commissioners to understand performance and validate achievement and payment.

NHS England has asked NHS Digital to collect aggregated immunisation data on the PCV HIB MenC monthly, via NHS Digital’s General Practice Extraction Service (GPES).

NHS England has asked NHS Digital to collect data on the data on the pertussis in pregnant women vaccination programme. NHS Digital's General Practice Extraction Service (GPES) will extract the aggregated data at GP practice level on a monthly basis.

The data is needed to allow NHS England to monitor and pay GP practices for participation in this programme.

 
DCB2090-3038 GPES: Physical Health Checks for People with Severe Mental Illness

Release number: Amd 37/2020

NHS England has asked NHS Digital to collect data on General Practice activity related to patients with severe mental illness (SMI).

This data helps to ensure that people with severe mental illness have their physical health needs met by monitoring the delivery of comprehensive physical health checks and collecting information on relevant follow-up interventions.

Patient identifiable data is extracted from General Practices via NHS Digital’s General Practice Extraction Service (GPES):

1. as a full-year extract in January 2021, covering the 2019-20 financial year

2. on a quarterly basis thereafter.

This collection will support implementation of the NHS Long Term Plan, under which access to physical health checks is identified as a clinical priority in reducing the levels of premature mortality for people living with SMI.

GPES: Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Vaccination (PPV) Programme

NHS England has asked NHS Digital to collect data on the pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccination programme. NHS Digital's General Practice Extraction Service (GPES) will extract the aggregated data at GP practice level on a monthly basis.

The data is needed to allow NHS England to monitor and pay GP practices for participation in this programme.

GPES: Network Contract Directed Enhanced Services (DES)

NHS England has asked NHS Digital to collect data on the impact of investment in Primary Care Networks (PCNs) made through the Additional Roles Reimbursement Scheme. NHS Digital's General Practice Extraction Service (GPES) will extract the aggregated data at GP practice level on a monthly basis.

The data will be used by NHS England to monitor the impact of investment in Primary Care Networks (PCNs) made as part of the five-year framework for GP contract reform to implement the NHS Long Term Plan.

This extraction was formerly known as GPES: Primary Care Networks Additional Staff.

GPES: Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF)

NHS England has asked NHS Digital to collect data on the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF). NHS Digital's General Practice Extraction Service (GPES) will extract the aggregated data at GP practice level on a monthly basis.

The primary purpose of this data collection will be for payment calculations to financially reward GP practices for correctly following the QOF guidance. The additional information collected will be used by NHS England for validation and performance assessments.

The data is needed to allow NHS England to monitor and pay GP practices for participation in the programme.

NHS England will collect data on the seasonal influenza vaccination programme. NHS England's General Practice Extraction Service (GPES) will extract the aggregated data at GP practice level on a monthly basis.

The data is needed to allow NHS England to monitor and pay GP practices for their participation in the programme.

GPES: Shingles Combined Vaccination Programme

NHS England will collect data on the Shingles vaccination programme.

This extract of Shingles vaccination data from GP Clinical systems, relating to patients aged 70 and older, and immunosuppressed patients aged 65-69, supports direct payment to GP practices under the General Medical Service (GMS) contract and provides management information to NHS England.

Aggregate, practice-level data is extracted monthly from GP systems via NHS England's General Practice Extraction Service (GPES).

Note that this collection combines the previously separate data extractions DCB2090-2208 GPES: Shingles (catch up aged 78) Vaccination Programme and DCB2090-2209 GPES: Shingles (routine aged 70) Vaccination Programme.

DAPB2090-3018 GP Appointments data

Release number: Amd 27/2023

NHS England will collect data about general practice appointments, from all general practices and Extended Access Providers in England, to improve the understanding of capacity and utilisation in general practice.

Data is submitted weekly from GP IT systems suppliers to NHS Engand via Secure Electronic File Transfer (SEFT). 

The data is used by healthcare managers and commissioners to plan and manage services more effectively.

GP Workload Tool

Release number: Amd 72/2020

NHS England has directed NHS Digital to collect General Practice (GP) workload data covering Patient Online Management Information (POMI). The data tracks the use of online appointments in General Practices and collects information on the availability to patients of electronic access to their test results, GP letters, prescriptions and online appointment booking facilities.

The data enables the NHS to better understand appointment activity and utilisation and demonstrate the use of general practice across the week, including by healthcare professional and by mode of appointment.

GP Systems Suppliers submit aggregate, GP-level data monthly to NHS Digital via a Secure Electronic File Transfer (SEFT).

HPV Booster Vaccination Programme

NHS England collects monthly, aggregated immunisation data on the HPV Booster vaccination programme.

The data is needed to allow NHS England to monitor and pay GP practices for their activity associated with this programme.

From October 2023, this will move from a manual to a fully automated service.

The data is needed to allow NHS England to monitor and pay GP practices for their activity associated with this programme.
