GP appointments data collection in support of winter pressures version 2: categorisation
This is a new data collection that will replace the existing General Practice (GP) appointments collection.
Overview of the collection
Following the GP appointments data project work NHS Digital undertook in 2017- 2018 and 2018- 2019 a further phase of work is required to introduce greater standardisation of appointment data.
This is to support national analysis of any developed general practice access/waiting time standard and/or capacity and utilisation metrics. This is required to support the NHS Long Term Plan, the general practice forward view and their commitment to improving access.
From April 2020 general practice will be required to categorise appointments, using a national standard that support the intention to publish GP activity and waiting times data monthly from 2021, alongside hospital data. Publication of the data will expose variation in access between networks and practice.
Scope of the collection
All general practices in England and extended access providers.
Legal basis for the collection
NHS Digital has been directed by NHS England under section 254 of the Health and Social Care Act 2012 to establish and operate a system for the collection and analysis of the information specified for this service: general practice appointments data collection in support of winter pressures.
In addition, NHS Digital has been directed by NHS England under section 254 of the Act to extend the scope of the existing collection to include extended access providers: GP appointments data collection.
