About this publication

This publication reports numbers of patients requiring adult acute mental health inpatient care that were admitted to a unit that does not form part of their usual local network of services and the numbers of these out of area placements that occurred because no bed was available locally.

The statistics reported include numbers of out of area placements active, starting or ending within the time period; distance of active placements; length of placements that have ended; and cost. The time periods covered are the month, last 3 months and the last year.  Statistics are presented nationally and at regional, sustainability and transformation partnership footprint, clinical commissioning group (CCG) and provider levels.  Limitations of coverage are explained within the report.
