Out of Area Placements in Mental Health Services January 2019

Official statistics

Summary

This report presents findings from the Out of Area Placements (OAPs) collection. The collection is expected to capture the details of all OAPs in England from both NHS and independent providers. NHS Digital is running this interim OAPs data collection in the Clinical Audit Platform (CAP) until the data becomes aligned and available from the MHSDS. The MHSDS is the chosen mechanism for the long term collection of this data.

A refresh of 2017/18 inappropriate OAP bed days by three month period for use in NHS England Quality Premium calculations can be found here: https://digital.nhs.uk/data-and-information/find-data-and-publications/supplementary-information/2018-supplementary-information-files/inappropriate-oap-days-in-rolling-three-month-groups-starting-with-march-2017-and-ending-with-march-2018-by-england-sending-provider-region-stp-and-ccg.

Key Facts

This monthly report of Out of Area Placements (OAPs) should be interpreted with caution as with the previous reports in this series. The Limitations section sets these issues out more fully.

This month, 52 organisations have participated in this collection out of 57 organisations in scope. This means that 91 per cent of organisations have participated. The definition of participation can be found on page 5 of the report.

This report only contains OAPs that started on or after 17 October 2016 (the date this OAPs collection launched).
