Out of Area Placements in Mental Health Services April 2019

Official statistics

Summary

This report presents findings from the Out of Area Placements in Mental Health Services April 2019 (OAPs) collection. The collection is expected to capture the details of all OAPs in England from both NHS and independent providers. NHS Digital is running this interim OAPs data collection in the Clinical Audit Platform (CAP) until the data becomes aligned and available from the MHSDS. The MHSDS is the chosen mechanism for the long term collection of this data.

A refresh of 2017-18 inappropriate OAP bed days by three month period for use in NHS England Quality Premium calculations can be found here: https://digital.nhs.uk/data-and-information/find-data-and-publications/supplementary-information/2018-supplementary-information-files/inappropriate-oap-days-in-rolling-three-month-groups-starting-with-march-2017-and-ending-with-march-2018-by-england-sending-provider-region-stp-and-ccg.

A correction has been made to this publication on 19 December 2019. This amendment relates to regional statistics only. All measures have now been corrected. Some minor changes to the formatting and wording within this publication series made after this edition was originally published to improve clarity have also been included. NHS Digital apologises for any inconvenience caused.

This monthly report of Out of Area Placements (OAPs) should be interpreted with caution, as with the previous reports in this series. The Limitations section sets out these issues more fully.

This month, 55 organisations have participated in this collection, out of 57 organisations in scope. This means that 96 per cent of organisations have participated. The definition of participation can be found on page 5 of the report.
