Date Range:

Summary

28 November 2019. Following user and stakeholder consultation, we made several revisions to our data processing and methodology and revised all figures from September 2015 to December 2018 in the General Practice Workforce December 2018 publication. Following later changes to the September 2015 to December 2016 full-time equivalent (FTE) GP locum figures, we revised all affected locum figures in the General Practice Workforce September 2019 publication.

The figures in this publication are no longer valid as they were calculated using the previous methodology and therefore have now been superseded.

More information and the revised figures can be found on the General Practice Workforce September 2019 publication.

A detailed view of the General Practice workforce including GPs by type and practice staff.

Please note: This publication has been amended and re-published on 04/11/2016 due to highlighted data quality issues with the original output. Regional GP and GP Practice Staff workforce figures may have changed, with the Detailed Tables file impacted by these changes. England totals and all vacancy, absence and joiners/leavers information is not affected.

Due to the change in data source these statistics are provisional experimental, so care needs to be taken when interpreting these figures. More information on the effect of this change on the figures provided here can be found in the data quality section.

The general practice data records numbers and details of GPs in England along with information on their practices, staff, patients, and the services they provide.

Time series data is available within the bulletin tables and more detailed information for March 2016 is available within the detailed results which includes data for England, by NHS England Regions, NHS England Region Geographies and Clinical Commissioning Groups.

Practice level results are available within the Practice Level Indicator Tool and within the associated CSV file. Anonymised GP level results are also available in CSV file format.

This report is one of several publications presenting details of staff numbers within the NHS workforce. Links to these publications are at the bottom of the page.

Given the classification of 'Provisional Experimental statistics' NHS Digital invited comments and feedback on the methodology applied which were reviewed over the summer and incorporated in revisions as part of this publication. Feedback is welcomed via email.

Please email us with your comments and suggestions, clearly stating NHS Workforce as the subject heading, via [email protected] or 0300 303 5678.
