NHS App Management Information - September 2026

Changes in this release

Age band distributions of NHS App users

This release introduces new age band breakdowns for NHS App users at England, regional and Integrated Care Board (ICB) level. The new tables are available in a separate workbook, NHS App Management Information Statistics - Age distribution - September 20206, accompanied by an open-data CSV file, NHS App Management Information Statistics - Age distribution CSV - September 20206, available to download under Resources on the Content page.

The new statistics are published for two existing NHS App measures:

  • Unique user logins (users logging into the NHS App during the reported month)
  • Registered users

The breakdowns show the percentage distribution of users by age band. Users with a recorded age under 13 years are excluded because use of the NHS App is restricted to individuals aged 13 years and over. Any records showing an age under 13 are treated as data quality issues and are excluded from both the numerator and denominator when calculating age distributions. Users with an unknown or invalid age are also excluded from both the numerator and denominator. As a result, the denominators used to calculate these percentages do not match the corresponding totals published elsewhere in this publication. In addition, a small number of users cannot be assigned to an NHS England region and are categorised as "Unknown" at regional and ICB level. These users are included in England-level figures but excluded from regional and ICB totals.

New publication format

To improve usability, the Excel workbook presents figures for March, June, September and December only. These months were selected as representative points within each quarter and provide a consistent time series whilst keeping the tables at a manageable size for users. The workbook contains data from September 2021 onwards.

The accompanying open-data CSV contains the full monthly time series. This file includes the numerator, denominator and resulting proportion for every age band, geography and reporting period, allowing users to undertake their own analysis and reproduce the published percentages.

The age band workbook and accompanying CSV will be published quarterly, alongside the NHS App Management Information releases relating to March, June, September and December. The CSV contains the complete monthly time series up to the latest reporting period included in each quarterly release.

Interpretation of the figures

Differences between regions and ICBs should be interpreted with caution. Variation in age distributions is likely to reflect differences in the age structure of local populations rather than differences in access to, or adoption of, the NHS App.

Why these statistics have been added

The new breakdowns provide additional insight into the demographics of NHS App users and complement the existing activity and registration measures published within this NHS App Management Information publication. They show how patterns of registration and use vary across age groups, geographies and over time, providing additional context on both NHS App adoption and active use.
