Changes in this release

New messaging and notifications metrics

This release introduces a number of new metrics relating to NHS App messaging and notifications, providing additional insight into message delivery, message read rates and notification preferences.

The following metrics have been added:

  • Messages delivered in NHS App
  • Unique users sent messages in the NHS App
  • Messages read within 24 hours (count and percentage)
  • Messages read within 72 hours (count and percentage)
  • Registered users opted in to notifications (count and percentage)
  • Active users opted in to notifications (count and percentage)

Messaging measures relate to in-app messages only and exclude messages with a status of Rejected. Push notifications are not included.

The 72-hour read measures are cumulative and include messages read within 24 hours.

Introduction of a Registered Users metric

This release introduces a new Registered Users metric.

This measure represents the number of NHS App accounts that remain active at the end of each reporting month. Unlike cumulative registration measures previously published, it excludes accounts that have subsequently been deleted and therefore provides a measure of the current registered NHS App user base.

The Registered Users metric is used as the denominator for the Registered Users opted in to notifications percentage.

Availability of historical data

Messaging metrics are available from November 2021 at national level and presented from November 2022 at ICB level. Earlier ICB-level figures have not been published due to the relatively small volumes observed during the early stages of service adoption and the need to ensure published outputs remain non-disclosive.

Notifications opt-in metrics are currently available from December 2024 onwards.
