Summary report - outpatient activity by index of multiple deprivation and ethnicity

As in 2019-20, the IMD decile with the highest first attendance rate in 2020-21 was ‘more deprived 10-20%’ with almost 43,300 first attendances per 100,000 people. The ‘least deprived 10%' and '‘less deprived 10-20%' had the 2nd and 3rd highest first attendance rate compared to population, respectively.

The ‘more deprived 30-40%’ group had the lowest rate with just over 40,800 first attendances per 100,000 people.

For 'all attendances', the IMD decile with the highest attendance rate in 2020-21 was ‘least deprived 10%' with just over 143,000 total attendances per 100,000 people. The ‘more deprived 30-40%’ group had the lowest rate with just over 134,300 total attendances per 100,000 people.

The ‘more deprived 10-20%’ group had the highest volume of 1st attendances (2.5 million) and the highest volume of all attendances (8.1 million).

Attendance numbers were down across all IMD deciles compared to 2019-20.

Across all ethnic groups, 29.0 per cent of attendances were first attendances, including those where ethnicity was unknown.

The ‘Other’ ethnic group recorded both the highest rate of 1st attendances (32.9 per cent) as a proportion of all attended appointments within the ethnic group and the highest rate of 1st attendances by population with just over 91,600 for every 100,000 people.

First attendances as a percentage of all attendances were broadly similar between the other ethnic groups (between 28.3% and 29.1%) but attendances per 100.000 population were somewhat lower for people of mixed ethnicity, at just over 21,000 per 100,000 population.

As in 2019-20, the Black ethnic group recorded the highest proportion of appointments that were did not attends (8.8 per cent).

Also as in 2019-20, the Other ethnic group recorded the highest rate of did not attends by population with just over 27,500 for every 100,000 people.
