Hospital Admitted Patient Care Activity 2019-20

There were 20.9 million FCEs recorded in 2019-20, compared to 20.8 million in 2018-19. This represents an increase of 0.7 per cent, the smallest annual percentage increase since 2001-02.

The average annual growth for FCEs over the last twenty years has been 2.8 per cent

There were 17.2 million FAEs recorded in 2019-20, compared to 17.1 million in 2018-19. This represents an increase of 0.4 per cent

In 2019-20 64.4 per cent of episodes were ordinary episodes involving a planned overnight stay and 35.6 per cent were day cases.

The proportion of day cases increased year on year between 2010-11 until 2016-17; however, over the last three years these percentages have been stable.
