Restrictive Intervention reporting in Adult Acute and Adult Learning Disabilities Mental Health Inpatient Settings

This report aims to support reducing the need for the use of restrictive practices in adult acute and adult learning disabilities mental health inpatient settings.

This report will cease to be updated from April 2025 data

The last iteration of this report will be for March 2025 data.

This indicator will underpin measures that will need to be put in place to implement the Mental Health Units (Use of Force) Act 2018 that came into force in 2022.

The statutory guidance supporting the Act is clear on the need for accurate recording of interventions. High quality data is a crucial building block to allow focus and reflection on the use of restrictive practices and consequently reduce the need for those practices.

Services will be able to use data from the report to support delivery of a quality improvement programme.

Mandatory and required restrictive practice metrics are collected from routine provider submission to the Mental Health Services Data Set (MHSDS).

The Adult Acute and Adult Learning Disabilities MHSDS Restrictive Intervention monthly data quality reports include granular provider, site and field level data compliance.
