Summary

This publication provides the timeliest picture available of people using NHS funded secondary mental health, learning disabilities and autism services in England, excluding those who are solely in contact with Talking Therapies. This information will be of use to people needing access to information quickly for operational decision making and other purposes. More detailed information on the quality and completeness of these statistics is available in the Data Quality section, as well as within the Data Coverage and Data Quality VODIM and Integrity files available under 'Resources'.


Highlights

Publication updates

The July 2026 Performance release includes a number of updates. These include:

  • An additional file which contains a count of both people and referrals waiting for treatment across secondary mental health and NHS Talking Therapies services.
  • Additional metrics for bed days for inappropriate out of areas placements (OAPs) in L1 and L2 rehabilitation inpatient care (MH and LDA rehabilitation beds), Acute Mental Health Unit for Adults with a Learning Disability and/or Autism and Adult Neuro-Psychiatry / Acquired Brain Injury in the reporting period
  • An update for EIP68 (EIP Caseload) to address the issue identified with the methodology.

2.41 million people had an open referral with mental health services, at the end of July

The majority of these (1.71 million) were in contact with adult mental health services

524,117 people had an open referral with children and young people’s mental health services, at the end of July

289,624 people had an open referral with learning disabilities and autism services, at the end of July

529,226 new referrals were received during July

2.58 million care contacts were attended during July

23,913 people were subject to the Mental Health Act, including 16,658 people detained in hospital, at the end of July

Mental Health Services Time Series Dashboard

The Mental Health Services Time Series Dashboard provides time series data for a number of key metrics within the publication with data dating back to April 2016. The dashboard also presents visuals for the demographic breakdowns alongside a small number of metrics shown at CCG / Sub ICB level.
