Announcement of methodological changes to the Restrictive Intervention Statistics

From Performance April 2022 onwards, the methodology underpinning construction of the restrictive interventions measures has changed.  This was necessary due to the changes within the restrictive interventions dataset tables introduced in MHSDS v5.  The methodological change review involving NHS England, CQC and NHS Digital resulted in an agreed new methodology to calculate the existing set of measures.

For further details, please refer to the Announcement of methodological changes to the Restrictive Intervention Statistics published on 29 June 2022 as well as the the metadata file.

Summary

This publication provides the timeliest picture available of people using NHS funded secondary mental health, learning disabilities and autism services in England. These are experimental statistics which are undergoing development and evaluation. This information will be of use to people needing access to information quickly for operational decision making and other purposes. More detailed information on the quality and completeness of these statistics is made available later in our Mental Health Bulletin: Annual Report publication series.

Release of 'End of Year Final' 2022/23 data

'End of Year Final' versions of the main monthly csv files for each month between April 2022 and March 2023, collected under MHSDS version 5, which reflect revised 2022-23 Multiple Submission Window Model submissions that occurred after 'Performance' monthly data had already been published are now available.   These csvs include a complete set of breakdowns, including the national level data that was omitted from the corresponding performance csv released at the time for each month between August 2022 and March 2023.

Please refer to the relevant monthly publication pages available from the Mental Health Services Monthly Statistics series page for further details and to access the 'End of Year Final' 2022-23 data.

COVID-19 and the production of statistics

Due to the coronavirus illness (COVID-19) disruption, the quality and coverage of some of our statistics has been affected, for example by an increase in non-submissions for some datasets. We are also seeing some different patterns in the submitted data. For example, fewer patients are being referred to hospital and more appointments being carried out via phone/telemedicine/email. Therefore, data should be interpreted with care over the COVID-19 period.

Updates to measures

For details of new measures recently introduced, or changes to existing measures, see the 'Notes on measures' page.  This includes details of the some additional demographic breakdowns which have been made available for selected measures for this first time in this publication.  Full details of any changes are also available in the associated Metadata file.

New Mental Health Services Time Series Interactive Power BI Visualisation.

A new interactive Power BI visualisation has been released as part of this publication.  Further details are available in the 'Interactive Tool' section below.
