Mental Health, Learning Disability and Autism Overview Statistics, Quarter 1 2026-27

The Mental Health, Learning Disability and Autism (MHLDA) Overview Dashboard is a  quarterly publication, first published in September 2026 with Quarter 1 2026/27 data. It aims to provide a high-level picture of progress against key, national ambitions and commitments where data is available.

The dashboard includes a selection of metrics from a range of other publications, chosen to align with the NHS 10-Year Health Plan, Medium Term Planning Framework 2026/27 to 2028/29, NHS Oversight Framework 2026/27 and other relevant strategic plans.  It also includes data on financial spend on MHLDA services, which is not publicly available elsewhere.  

By bringing this information together in one place, we hope to make it easier to see and track progress against national priorities for the MHLDA sector thus enabling greater transparency and accountability.

The dashboard does not include all the data available relating to the MHLDA sector and services.  Rather it provides a snapshot of the data available and additional metrics and data can be found in the source publications.   

The dashboard is being rolled out in phases as set out below.  This is subject to change depending on the analytical capacity available. 

• Phase 1 (Q1 2026/27 publication, September 2026)   

• Mental health metrics sourced from the following publications: Mental Health Services Monthly Statistics (MHSDS) and NHS Talking Therapies Monthly Statistics Including Employment Advisors.  Plus 2026/27 planned spend data, available in this publication only.    

• Phase 2 (Q2 2026/27 publication, November 2026)  

• Addition of metrics sourced from the following publications: Assuring Transformation (AT) and Autism Waiting Time Statistics.  Plus metrics on physical health checks for people with a learning disability or serious mental illness (data sourced from the General Practice Extraction Service or GPES). 

• Phase 3 (Q3 2026/27 publication, February 2027)   

• Addition of metrics from other sources including the Care Quality Commission, Department for Education, NHS Workforce Statistics, the Emergency Care Data Set (ECDS) and the General Practice Extraction Service.      

The dashboard will be reviewed to ensure it includes the most relevant robust key metrics for the sector. This includes the timing of the addition of ADHD specific metrics, which currently are available as management information. Some of our national priorities do not currently have robust metrics against them, for example, the roll out of Neighbourhood Mental Health Centres, and so are not represented in the publication.   

The dashboard is a public-facing resource aimed at a broad range of stakeholder groups including: the public; policy makers; health sector partners (e.g. CQC, ONS); voluntary and charitable sector; academic and research community; and the media.    

It is not a patient-facing resource in that it does not provide information about individual services or providers that might help inform patient, carer and families’ choices or decisions.  Nor is it a system-facing resource in that it does not provide the level of information required for commissioners (ICBs) to monitor the performance of service providers in their area, or for providers to monitor performance within their trust.

Model Health System

Two separate resources, one NHS-facing, the other public and patient-facing, showing a broad range of data across the NHS.

The dashboard will be published quarterly, displaying data for the latest month available, rather than aggregate data for the whole quarter (i.e. not the sum of 3 months of data). 

Metrics in the dashboard will be made available at national, regional and ICB level.  However, not all metrics included have these breakdowns available at present, and where this is the case, we have included national data only.  Over time, we will add additional geographical breakdowns. 

Only a selection of metrics are broken down by additional demographic data, in line with the programme’s current priority inequalities metrics.  This will be added to over time.  Additional breakdowns such as deprivation, ethnicity and age, can be found in the source publications e.g. MHSDS.

The majority of the metrics included in the dashboard are taken from other, existing official statistical publications.  The main exception to this is the data on financial spend, which is only published here.  The full list of data sources can be found in the 'Overview' chapter, which can be found at the bottom of this page, or via the chapter navigation at the top of the page.

There are no specific data quality notes included within this publication. This publication takes data which is already published elsewhere, those publications include relevant data quality files and notes.
