Summary
The Mental Health, Learning Disability and Autism (MHLDA) Overview Dashboard is a quarterly publication, first published in September 2026 with Quarter 1 2026/27 data. It aims to provide a high-level picture of progress against key, national ambitions and commitments where data is available.
The dashboard includes a selection of metrics from a range of other publications, chosen to align with the NHS 10-Year Health Plan, Medium Term Planning Framework 2026/27 to 2028/29, NHS Oversight Framework 2026/27 and other relevant strategic plans. It also includes data on financial spend on MHLDA services, which is not publicly available elsewhere.
By bringing this information together in one place, we hope to make it easier to see and track progress against national priorities for the MHLDA sector thus enabling greater transparency and accountability.

Mental health sector funding
The Mental Health Investment Standard (MHIS) was introduced in 2015/16, requiring all local healthcare commissioners (now Integrated Care Boards or ICBs) to maintain or increase the proportion of spending on mental health services in line with their spending on all other health services. Since its introduction, the NHS in England nationally has met its commitment to achieve the MHIS.
In 2026/27 to 2028/29, ICBs continue to be required to meet the MHIS, with MHIS values now being based on flat real funding growth (as set out in the Medium-term planning framework: Revenue finance and contracting guidance).
Note that the MHIS does not include all spend that takes place in the sector, for example, it excludes capital funding, specialised commissioning, learning disabilities, autism and dementia services.

Key facts from the latest data (up to July 2026)
Key Facts
In the previous 3 months, 35,322 adults (18yrs+) and 64,924 children and young people (0-17yrs) received help from community mental health services.
At the end of July, 1,415,045 people (all ages) were waiting for access to assessment, treatment and support within the wider mental health sector.
This includes NHS Talking Therapies, adult and children and young people’s community mental health services, neurodevelopmental or dementia assessment, learning disabilities, gender identity, and treatment for addictions.
At the end of July, 75,739 children and young people (0-17 years) with mental-health related referrals were waiting over 104 weeks for help from community mental health services.
In the last month, 62,318 courses of NHS Talking Therapies treatment were completed and for 46.9% of referrals, the person achieved reliable recovery.
This is against a target of 805,000 courses of treatment to be delivered in the 12 months ending March 2027, and 51% of people achieving reliable recovery also by the end of 2026/27.
In the last 12 months, 51,661 referrals made to Individual Placement Support (IPS - an employment programme) accessed this service.
This is against a target of 63,500 by the end of 2026/27.
In the last month, 72% of new ‘urgent’ referrals to community crisis services received their first face-to-face contact within 24 hours of referral.
At the end of July 2026, there were 285 active inappropriate out of area placements (OAPs) for adult acute, older adult acute and Psychiatric Intensive Care Units (PICU).
This is against a target of 0 by the end of 2027/28.
