Summary of proportion of outpatient attendances and appointments by commissioning region

London had the highest outpatient activity with both the highest number of appointments (24.7 million or 19.8%) and attendances (18.3 million or 19.0%).

The South West region had both the lowest number of appointments (11.2 million or 9.0%) and attendances (8.6 million or 8.9%).

The Midlands region had the highest proportion of outpatient appointments that were actually attended, with 17.7 million attendances out of 22.2 million appointments (79.8%) while London had the lowest proportion of appointments that were attended (18.3 million attendances out of 24.7 million appointments or 74.0%).  


Summary of Proportion of 1st attendances and subsequent attendances by Commissioning Region, 2019-20

London had the highest number of first attendances (6.0 million or 19.3% of the national total) and subsequent attendances (12.3 million or 18.8% of the national total) in 2019-20.

The South West region had the lowest number of first attendances (2.8 million or 9.1% of the national total) and subsequent attendances (5.7 million or 8.8% of the national total).

The North West region had the highest number of subsequent attendances per first attendance (2.50) while the South East region had the lowest (1.96).
