Example
In 2008-09, £100 was spent on a piece of equipment for a client. In 2018-19, a replacement piece of equipment had to be bought for £110. In cash terms, the cost of this piece of equipment has risen by £10 (10%). If, however the rate of inflation is taken into account, the cost of the product in 2008-09 at 2018-19 prices would have been £118.45 (see calculation below). This would mean that the product is cheaper in real terms in 2018-19 by £8.45 (7%).
Calculation
2008-09 price in 2018-19 real terms = 2008-09 price X (GDP deflator 2018-19 / GDP deflator 2008-09)
therefore:
2008-09 price in 2018-19 real terms = £100 X (100 / 84.421) = £118.45
