Summary

28 November 2019. Following user and stakeholder consultation, we made several revisions to our data processing and methodology and revised all figures from September 2015 to December 2018 in the General Practice Workforce December 2018 publication. Following later changes to the September 2015 to December 2016 full-time equivalent (FTE) GP locum figures, we revised all affected locum figures in the General Practice Workforce September 2019 publication.

The figures in this publication are no longer valid as they were calculated using the previous methodology and therefore have now been superseded.

More information and the revised figures can be found on the General Practice Workforce September 2019 publication page

A provisional view of GPs by type working in General Practice.

The general practice data records numbers and details of GPs in England. Time series data is available within the excel tables together with more detailed information for September 2017 data for England, by NHS England Regions, Health Education England Regions, Clinical Commissioning Groups and practice.

This report is one of several publications presenting details of staff numbers within the NHS workforce. Links to these publications are at the bottom of the page.

Given the classification of 'Provisional Experimental statistics' NHS Digital invites comments and feedback on the methodology applied which were reviewed over the summer and incorporated in revisions as part of this publication. Feedback is welcomed via email.

Please email us with your comments and suggestions, clearly stating NHS Workforce as the subject heading, via [email protected] or 0300 303 5678.

Notes:

  1. This publication only includes information on GPs, other practice staff groups including Nurses are not included.
  2. Electronic Staff Record (ESR) information for September 2017 is not available at the time of publication, therefore ESR data from June 2017 has been used. It is for this reason that the General and Personal Medical Services in England September 2017 workforce report has been labelled 'Provisional'. Final September 2017 data available February 2018
  3. This release contains provisional information for GP workforce as at September 2017 and final figures for GP workforce data as at June 2017.  The move from provisional to final figures generally involves small changes to the figures taking into account the latest ESR data and it is the opportunity for other amendments, however on this occasion the change is slightly bigger than we would normally expect due to correcting for a processing anomaly which impacted on the accuracy of the provisional June figures at national level.  Further details are contained within the publication document.

Highlights

• The total GP headcount is 41,324 as at 30 September 2017. This is a decrease of 240 (-0.6%) from 41,564 in June 2017.

• The total GP full time equivalent (FTE) is 33,302 as at September. This is a decrease of 259 (-0.8%) from 33,560 in June.

• There are 39,022 headcount GPs (excluding Locums), a decrease of 244 (-0.6%) from 39,266 in June 2017.

• This represents 32,272 FTE GPs (excluding Locums), a decrease of 318 (-1.0%) from 32,590 in June 2017.

Comparisons between June  and September  figures should be treated with caution due to the currently unknown seasonality effect given this is the first annual cycle of the quarterly GP figures.
