Expansion and standardisation of the Digital Red Bag (eRedBag) - sharing a standard set of information held by Care Homes with the South West London Health Information Exchange portal and the National Record Locator for health staff to see.

Description

Standardisation and expansion of the eRedBag.

Standardisation was achieved by working with the PRSB on agreeing a standard set of data to go with a care home resident when they go to hospital urgently.

Expansion was achieved by sharing that agreed standard information, entered into Person Centred Software’s (a care software provider) system, onto the shared Cerner Health Information Exchange (HIE) and as a record pointer onto the National Record Locator (NRL) for health staff to see.

Another care planning system supplier, Nourish, has also developed the facility to extract the same standard dataset and share with local hospitals, and are developing its software to share with the HIE and the NRL.

The whole project involved the development of a national product, which included a national standard data set, technical solutions, a DSPT Workbook and a mobilisation pack.

Products

1. Mobilisation Pack containing:

  • 'How to guides', case studies and lessons learned
  • Videos of user stories (e.g. "My experiences of using an eRedbag")
  • Organisational case studies (e.g. "What it was like to implement the eRedbag in our hospital/local authority/CCG/software system")
  • Project documents to support monitoring and evaluation and calculating ROIs

2. Data Security and Protection Toolkit Standards Met Workbook (on the Digital Social Care website).

3. Two PRSB standards "About Me" and "Urgent referral to the hospital from the care home".

4. Care Software Providers Association (CASPA) set-up to support the care planning software suppliers to share their learning and keep the momentum.

One of the main objectives of the pathfinder projects was that any other communities that might wish to adopt a similar approach should not be charged a second time by the supplier for the same software development costs (although reasonable implementation and maintenance could of course be levied).
