Care Identity applications and services

How to use Care Identity Management, the Care Identity Service application and Apply for Care ID, and information on CIS2 Authentication.

Care Identity Management

This service allows Registration Authority users to manage access to patient data.

Care Identity Management will replace Care Identity Service in stages. It is currently available to:

  • Registration Authority Managers
  • Registration Authority Agents
  • Registration Authority Advanced Agents

Self-service smartcard unlock

This application allows clinicians and other staff to unlock their own smartcards, without having to register or contact their Registration Authority.


Care Identity Service application

The Care Identity Service application remains available to all roles, but it will gradually be replaced by Care Identity Management. You should switch to Care Identity Management when it becomes available to your role.


Apply for Care ID

Apply for Care ID enables staff to verify their own identity and create their own care identity profile.

Access to patient data is available using different types of authenticator. Find out more about authentication using:


CIS2 Authentication

The secure authentication service used by health and care professionals in England to access national clinical information systems. This includes how to access patient data using smartcards and other authenticators, including security keys, Windows Hello for Business and Microsoft Authenticator.


CIS1 Authentication

This legacy authentication service is being replaced by CIS2 Authentication. Find out more about the deprecation of CIS1 Authentication.
