Summary
This publication primarily presents analysis of data from an additional collection covering the period April to September 2020. It has been conducted in order to provide an early picture at a national and local level of the impact of the Covid 19 pandemic on contraception provision during 2020.
All data from April 2020 is provisional and a full annual collection for 2020/2021 will be conducted later in the year.
This publication covers contraceptive activity taking place at dedicated Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) services in England, as recorded in the Sexual and Reproductive Health Activity Dataset (SRHAD), a mandated collection for all providers of NHS SRH services.
Data from GP settings and pharmacies is not included.
People attend SRH services for a variety of reasons, but the main focus of this report is contraception.
Latest available data is 2020/21 (April to September only).
Data is for Sexual and Reproductive Health services only.
37% fall in contraception-related contacts with SRH services compared to April to September 2019
This is a fall of 249,927 contraception related contacts
Overall contacts (includes those for non-contraception reasons) fell by 35% over the same period
Uptake of long acting reversible contraceptives has fallen to 43%
This is down from 46% in 2019/20
(Includes implants, IU devices, IU systems and injectable contraceptives)
53% fall in emergency contraceptive items provided by SRH services compared to April to September 2019
This is a fall of 21,766 emergency contraception items
44% of contacts were non-face to face
This compares to only 3% in 2019/20
