Practice List Size Comparison

A comparison of the proportion of practices, grouped by practice list size in July 2013 and July 2019.

Data from 2013 is from all practices, whilst data from 2019 is restricted to open and active practices in line with the publication.

Figure 1: Percentage of practices grouped by practice list size

In July 2013 the largest proportion of practices (23.1 per cent) had between 2,000 and 3,999 registered patients, whilst in July 2019 the largest proportion of practices (16.0 per cent) had between 4,000 and 5,999 registered patients.

The proportion of practices with between 0 and 1,999 registered patients has dropped from 6.2 per cent in July 2013 to 2.9 in July 2019 and the proportion of practices with a list size greater than 20,00 has increased from 1.0 per cent to 2.8 percent.

This reflects the fact that practice list sizes are increasing, whilst the number of practices have fallen by over 1,500 between July 2013 and July 2019 (8,053 to 6939).
