Hip Replacements

For the 30,937 hip replacement procedures, a majority of patients were 50 years old or older (92.7%). Patients aged 50-69 accounted for 44.2% compared to 48.5% for those over 70 years old.

59.3% of all hip replacements were carried out on female patients

40.7% were male patients

The chart below show the number of hip replacement procedures per 100,000 people by age and gender (from the mid-year 2020 population estimates). The chart shows a similar pattern for males and females, with the highest rate for both males and females being the 75-79 age group (186.0 per 100,000 for female and 271.1 per 100,000 for males).


Knee Replacements

There were 31,133 knee replacement procedures and almost all patients were 50 years old or older (97.3%). Patients aged 50-69 accounted for 47.9% whereas 49.4% for those over 70 years old.

53.3% of knee replacements were carried out on female patients

44.7% were male patients.

The chart below shows the number of knee replacement procedures per 100,000 people by age and gender (from the mid-year 2020 population estimates). As with hip replacements there is a similar pattern for males and females, with the highest rate for both males and females being the 75-79 age group (265.4 per 100,000 for female and 234.1 per 100,000 for males).
