Release of 'End of Year Final' data
From April 2020 onwards, NHS Digital has been implementing a multiple submission window model (MSWM) for MHSDS. This allows providers to retrospectively submit data for a specific reporting period once the initial provisional and performance submission windows have closed. Please click on 'Multiple Submission Window Model' under 'Related Links' at the bottom of this page for further information.
'End of Year Final' versions of the main monthly csv files for each of the 5 months between April 2021 and August 2021 which reflect these revised 2021/22 MSWM submissions that occurred after 'Performance' monthly data had already been published are now available.
The September 2021 publication was the final monthly report to be published using data collected under MHSDS version 4.1, and as such, contained 'End of Year Final' rather than 'Performance' data when originally published.
'End of Year Final' versions of the 'Mental Health Act', 'Children and Young People with an Eating Disorder', 'Children and Young People and Perinatal' and 'Length of Stay metrics' CSV files have been released where applicable also.
An 'End of Year Final' version of the 'Restrictive Interventions' CSV file was released in July 2022.
The MHSDS Monthly: Performance and Provisional Access and Waiting Times Reference Tables excel files have not been reissued using 'End of Year Final' data. However the underlying Access and Waiting Times measures are available as 'End of Year Final' data within the MHSDS Monthly: End of Year Final MHSDS Data CSV file.
The Provisional October, Provisional November 2021 publication was the first monthly report to be published using data collected under MHSDS version 5. NHS Digital published 'End of Year Final' versions of the main monthly csv files for each of the 5 months between October 2021 and February 2022 in July 2022.
MHS95 methodology update
Two updates to the methodology used to produce MHS95 (Number of Children and Young People aged under 18 supported through NHS funded mental health with at least one contact (12 month rolling)) have been made. The first affects the 'CCG; Provider' breakdown and rectifies an issue which meant that not all relevant 'CCG; Provider' activity was being counted in the data originally released. The second is a refinement to better record the activity undertaken in anonymous providers such as Kooth plc (previously known as XenZone Ltd).
Revised data for March, April and May 2021 using the new methodology is now available within the relevant publication as v2 of the MHSDS Monthly Children and Young People and Perinatal CSV files. Data for June 2021 onwards uses the new methodology.
NHS Digital apologises for any inconvenience caused.
Children and Young People Eating Disorder (CYP ED) metrics (ED85 to ED90)
From this publication onwards the CYP Eating Disorder metrics ED85 to ED90 (and their breakdowns) have been incorporated into the main monthly file and no longer appear as a standalone file in the publication.
Also to note: investigations into an issue with the Children and Young People with an Eating Disorder measures previously published within the MHSDS Monthly: Performance January and February 2021 Children and Young People with an Eating Disorder Data File have now been completed. These files were removed pending investigation but now been reinstated, although as an 'End of Year' version. If you hold a previously downloaded 'Performance' version, we advise downloading the 'End of Year' version. Revised versions of the Provisional February and March 2021 data originally released has not been re-released as they have now been superseded by data published as part of the January and February 2021 publication.
New measures
These new measures have been released from Performance June 2021 data onwards:
Length of Stay (MHS100 to MHS105)
Twelve length of stay measures were added that relate to people being discharged from adult acute and older adult acute beds as well as those being discharged aged 0 to 17. These metrics also include a rate of people discharged per 100,000 at CCG level. These measures are currently available for Performance data only.
Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP68 to EIP69)
Three Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) measures were added that relate to EIP caseload and how many of these have NICE concordant SNOMED codes or any other SNOMED codes associated with their referral. These metrics use NHSE methodology.
Perinatal (PMH23b to PMH36a)
Fourteen Perinatal measures have been added that provide further analysis of women in contact with mental health services who are new or expectant mothers. These measures look in more detail at mothers accessing services between their antenatal booking appointment and 24 months. The analysis also looks at those accessing services between 12 and 24 months post pregnancy for the first time. This includes those who are either new to services or continuing with services. Addition breakdowns now include by Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD)
Reissue of the Women in contact with mental health services who were new or expectant mothers files
An issue had been identified with the CCG breakdowns contained within the two files relating to Women in contact with mental health services who were new or expectant mothers. This issue has been fixed and the files have been reissued. The other measures and breakdowns in the file are unaffected.
