Main findings from the AT and MHSDS datasets
Assuring Transformation Data Set
Data collected at the end of March 2021 shows that:
- 2,035 inpatients were in hospital at the end of the reporting period.
- More inpatients were discharged (150) than admitted (105) to hospitals. Out of the 150 inpatients who were discharged/transferred from hospital in March 2021, 110 (73%) were discharged back into the community.
- Many inpatients have been in hospital for a long time. Of those in hospital at the end of March 2021, 1,205 (59%) had a total length of stay of over 2 years.
- At the end of March 2021, Around half of inpatients (1,065, 52%) were in a non-secure ward. There were 965 (48%) inpatients in a secure ward.
- The largest proportion of inpatients (30%) were aged between 25-34 (600) and the lowest proportion (2%) were aged 65 and over (40).
- In line with previous months trends, there were more males (1,450) than females (580) in hospital this month (71% were male).
- There were 105 admissions to hospital; of these 60 were first admissions, 20 were readmissions within a year of the previous discharge and 25 were transfers from other hospitals.
- Over a third of inpatients (36%) last had a review of their care over 6 months ago (730 people).
- Under half of inpatients (48%) have a date planned for them to leave hospital (985).
Mental Health Services Data Set
At the end of January 2021 (based on hospital spells data):
- There were 3,205 people with learning disabilities and/ or autistic spectrum disorders (LDA) in hospital.
- There were 935 admissions and 1,010 discharges. 89% of these were discharged back into the community.
- There were 239,575 referrals for people with LDA.
Of these inpatients:
- 1,245 (39%) had been in hospital for over 2 years.
- There are 485 inpatients with a planned discharge date (15%).
- 110 (3%) had a delayed discharge.
- The largest proportion (29%) were aged between 25-34 (945).
- The lowest proportion (5%) were aged 65 and over (150).
- 70% were male (2,235) and 30% were female (955).
Findings based on ward stays data:
- There were 3,180 ward stays reported for the end of the period.
- The largest group of inpatients were in an adult mental health ward (1,375, 43%), followed by a learning disabilities ward (1,325, 42%).
- 1,950 (61%) were in a non-secure setting. 1,150 (36%) were in a secure setting.
- 465 (15%) travelled over 50km from home to get to the hospital for care or treatment.
- 420 patients were restrained at least once.
