How we use the information (processing activities) | The National Events Management Service (NEMS) shares messages about events in patients and service users care and treatment, between permitted health and social care organisations, services, care-settings, professionals and patients / service users. This exchange occurs in near-real time for health and social care purposes including other additional purposes to support care. NHS Digital provides the means of supporting the service and processes the data between Controllers who publish and receive the shared personal data which flows through NEMS. NHS Digital does not access the content of the message or collect the messages. NHS Digital does collect a limited amount of data for audit and monitoring purposes. This data is necessary for the operational management and maintenance of the service, monitoring of controller usage and ensuring the exchange of messages is secure. NHS Digital manages the access to the NEMS service and validates, where necessary, the subscriptions against data we hold in the Personal Demographics Service. This data is held on the cloud to enable better integration with health and care organisations and their systems |

Where we use this data
Personal Demographics Service
The Personal Demographics Service (PDS) is the national master database of all NHS patients in England, Wales and the Isle of Man - holding basic patient details such as name, address, date of birth, contact details, registered GP, nominated pharmacy and NHS number. PDS has a National Back Office for handling data quality.
National Events Management Service (NEMS)
The National Events Management Service (NEMS) enables the sharing of specific health information about a patient in near real-time. Information is shared in the form of event messages, following a publish and subscribe model and using the NHS Spine.
