Clinical indicators

Clinical indicators are a collection of over a thousand data sets that we publish. The data is used by clinical staff, commissioners, researchers, and others to help with decision-making in health and care. A wide variety of subjects are covered, ranging from quality through to population health and the outcome of treatments.

About the Clinical Commissioning Group Outcomes Indicator Set (CCG OIS)

The Clinical Commissioning Group Outcomes Indicator Set (CCG OIS) provides clear, comparative information for CCGs about the quality of health services and the associated health outcomes. Note the October 2022 publication is the final release in this series for the reporting period ending in 2021/22.

Compendium: Emergency readmissions to hospital within 30 days of discharge

Originally a wide-ranging collection of over 1,000 indicators designed to provide a comprehensive overview of population health at a national, regional and local level. A reduced set remain covering Emergency Readmissions.

About the NHS Outcomes Framework (NHS OF)

The NHS Outcomes Framework (NHS OF) provides national level accountability for the outcomes the NHS delivers. Following the merger of NHS Digital and NHS England on 1st February 2023 we are reviewing the future presentation of the NHS Outcomes Framework indicators.

About Seven-day Services

These are experimental statistics which provide information on how we can effectively measure both improvement and variation in care provision across the week. From April 2020, the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) is no longer commissioning NHS Digital to produce these indicators. Therefore, no further publications in this series are planned.

About the Summary Hospital-level Mortality Indicator (SHMI)

The Summary Hospital-level Mortality Indicator (SHMI) reports on mortality at trust level across the NHS in England using a standard and transparent methodology. It is produced and published monthly as a National Statistic by NHS England.
