Summary

These are aggregated data on key health issues for people who are recorded by their GP as having a learning disability, and comparative data about a control group who are not recorded by their GP as having a learning disability.

Highlights

  • In 2016-17, 1 in 218 people were recorded as having a learning disability.
  • Over 57 per cent of patients registered at General Practices in England were included in these data, an increase from 51 per cent in 2014-15.
  • On average, females with learning disabilities had around an 18 year shorter life expectancy than the general population, and males had around a 14 year shorter life expectancy than the general population.
  • Almost 80 per cent of eligible patients with a learning disability aged 60-69 received screening for colorectal cancer, an increase from 69 per cent in 2014-15.
  • Overall, almost 50 per cent of patients with a learning disability received an annual learning disability health check in 2016-17. This is an increase from 43 per cent in 2014-15.
  • Around 42 per cent of patients with a learning disability received a seasonal influenza immunisation in 2016-17 compared to 41 per cent in 2014-15.
  • The overall rate of constipation identified in patients with a learning disability was just over 13 per cent in 2016-17. This is an increase from under 2 per cent in 2014-15.
  • 3 per cent of patients with a learning disability also had a diagnosis of dysphagia, with the highest prevalence recorded in patients aged 75 and over.
