NHS England received a request for the following statistics in relation to children’s mental health services, for the financial years from 2020 to 2026:

  1. How many children were referred to Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAHMS) each year?
  2. How many children had their CAHMS referral rejected?
  3. How many children had their CAHMS referral closed after one contact?
  4. What are the most common conditions children who were rejected have?
  5. How many children with suspected neurodivergence were turned away?

Our response

In response we provided.

  • under 18s referred to mental health services by primary reason for referral, referral rejection reason and referral closure reason
  • under 18s referred to mental health services where the referral was closed after one direct or indirect contact.

Time period is 1 April 2020 to 31 March 2026
