Actions for breast screening office managers and users

BS-Select and BSIS users will use smart cards and CIS2 to login. This replaces the login process via Open Exeter.

Actions for breast screening offices
  • All users will need a smart card. If any of your BS-Select and or BSIS users don’t already have one, please liaise with your local Registration Authority (RA) manager to have one issued.
  • Liaise with your trusts local Registration Authority (RA) to have a ‘Breast Screening’ position created locally that includes the BS-Select or BSIS activity code (B1808).
  • Ask the local RA to allocate the newly created ‘Breast Screening’ position to the smart card accounts of all your BS-Select and/or BSIS users.
  • Send a list of your BS-Select and BSIS users along with their smart card number to the National Service Desk helpdesk so that the smart card number can be added to the user's accounts.
  • All users must ensure that their smart card profile has been updated with their email address.
  • Liaise with your local IT team to check that they have installed the latest CIS2 software on all users' laptops or PCs. For more information read the actions for local IT teams.

The facility to login via Open Exeter will continue to be available during roll out, so if there are any problems with the CIS2 or smart card login, users will be able to revert to logging in via Open Exeter.

Check your smartcard setup to confirm that your laptop or PC has the latest CIS2 software installed.

Obtaining a smart card

BS-Select and BSIS users that do not already have an NHS smart card will need to obtain one from their trusts local Registration Authority (RA).

To register the applicant for a national verified digital identity, a local RA will arrange a face-to-face meeting.

Guidance for BSOs to set up smart card users on BS-Select and BSIS

Please clearly state 'BSIS' or 'BS-Select Smartcard Numbers' as the subject header and include your BSO code is within the email content.

This process must be repeated separately for BS-Select and BSIS, for users of both systems.

Raise a service log with the National Service Desk to request the set-up a smart card user on BS Select [email protected]

The request to include the following information for each user:

  • BS-Select and/or BSIS user's full name
  • name of requesting organisation
  • BS-Select and or BSIS user code
  • smart card UUID (the long number printed on the front of the user’s smart card)

Adding an email address

All users need to ensure that their smartcard user profile has been updated with an email address. This can be done by the RA or the user via the Care Identity Service Portal.

To do this:

1. Log on to the NHS Spine portal.

CIS2 login issues

There are 3 steps to enable CIS2 login:

  1. Installation of NHS Credential Management.
  2. Smartcard configuration (via the local Registration Authority).
  3. UUID setup (via the helpdesk).

If you see an error when you first attempt to login it could be that your setup has not been completed.

This could either be due to your smartcard configuration not being complete or your smartcard ID not being added to your Breast Screening user account.

Please contact the Help Desk at [email protected] or call 0300 303 5035 for help in resolving these issues.
