Mergers and acquisitions

Proposed changes are those which ODS have been informed are due to take place by local, affected organisations and/or NHS England, but which are not yet formally approved. As such, the details of any proposed changes are subject to change, delay or cancellation. We advise that ODS data users periodically check this webpage for further updates.

Legally effective changes are those which have been formally approved, either by issue of a parliamentary Statutory Instrument or an NHS England approved Grant of Acquisition or Merger. As such, these changes have been reflected within ODS published data.

Formally approved name changes for statutory organisations which have occurred in the current financial year are also detailed below.

Proposed/pending statutory instrument

The acquisition of Solent NHS Trust (R1C) by Southern Health NHS Trust (RW1) and the subsequent rename of Southern Health NHS Trust (RW1). Target implementation date: 1 April 2024

NHS England merger

The merger of NHS England, including NHS Digital from January 2023, and Health Education England from April 2023, will create a new NHS England. Health Education England will transfer into the new NHS England on 1 April 2023 subject to a statutory order being passed through parliament. 

As a result of the merger, we confirm that the ODS reference code currently assigned to Health Education England (T1510) will remain in place, but the organisation name Health Education England will be renamed NHS England – T1510 from 1 April 2023.
