National Health Application and Infrastructure Services (NHAIS) is an IT platform used by the NHS in England, Wales, and Isle of Man to manage primary care registration and deliver cervical screening.

About this service

NHAIS is an IT platform used by the NHS in England, Wales, and Isle of Man to manage primary care registration and deliver cervical screening.

NHAIS is being replaced by the Primary Care Registration Management (PCRM) and Cervical Screening Management System (CSMS) in 2024.

The NHS currently uses two solutions to maintain and access patient demographic data as follows:

  1. NHAIS.
  2. Personal Demographics Service (PDS).

The introduction of PCRM will enable NHAIS and Open Exeter to be closed, and PDS to be the single national source of patient demographic information for health and care services in England, Wales and Isle of Man.

Status, service level and current usage

This service is deprecated and is being replaced by the Primary Care Registration Management (PCRM) and Cervical Screening Management System (CSMS) in 2024.

NHAIS is a silver service, meaning it is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and supported from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday excluding bank holidays. 

Roadmap

The items for the NHAIS roadmap are:

January to March 2024
  • Cervical Screening Management System (CSMS) goes live
April to June 2024
  • Primary Care Registration Management (PCRM) rollout completed in England
October to December 2024
  • NHAIS decommissioned

Open Exeter is an IT platform used by the NHS in England and Isle of Man to deliver cervical screening and to access the Bowel Cancer Screening Service (BCSS), Breast Screening Select (BS-Select) and Breast Screening Information System (BSIS).

The NHS Cervical Screening Programme (NHS CSP) call/recall system invites women to book a cervical screening appointment every three or five years, depending on their age.
