Implement CP-IS in your organisation

Implementing Child Protection - Information Sharing (CP-IS) requires joint working between local authorities, NHS organisations, their IT systems suppliers and the NHS Digital project team.

Current scope

NHS unscheduled care settings in England must implement links to CP-IS as set out in Information Standards Notice ISN 1609 and the NHS Standard Contract

The unscheduled care settings concerned are:

  • emergency departments
  • minor injury units
  • walk-in centres
  • maternity units
  • GP out-of-hours services
  • paediatric wards
  • ambulance services

IT systems suppliers and their customers therefore need to take steps towards implementing CP-IS.

Future intended scope

The Long Term Plan says CP-IS will be extended to 'all health care settings'. Based on advice from safeguarding specialists, we are focussing on the following care settings:

  • general practice (in hours)
  • child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS)
  • sexual assault referral centres
  • termination of pregnancy services
  • school nursing and health visitors
  • community paediatrics
  • dentistry (appointment based services, including emergency care)

We have made CP-IS available to early adopters in these settings, with the service being made available for wider use from April 2024.

Engaging with suppliers

The CP-IS project team works closely with suppliers who are developing CP-IS functionality and supports them through the development and assurance of their solutions.

We review the supplier's customer site 'footprint' and work with them to develop an implementation approach. This includes prioritising sites that can 'go live' with their NHS or local authority partners.

We help suppliers to identify an appropriate 'first of type site' for their first 'go live'. And we work with that site to ensure they have successfully completed all of the actions required to 'go live' and make good use of the new functionality.
