Statistics on Women's Smoking Status at Time of Delivery: England Quarter 1, 2019-20

10.4% of pregnant women were known to be smokers at the time of delivery during quarter 1 of 2019/20.

This is down from 10.9% in the previous quarter (quarter 4, 2018/19).

The current national ambition is to achieve a level of 6% or less by 2022.

In quarter 1 of 2019/20, 4 CCGs recorded less than 2 per cent of women known to be smokers at time of delivery; NHS Luton (1.2%), NHS West London (1.4%), NHS Hammersmith and Fulham (1.4%), and NHS Central London (1.9%). 

6 CCGs had proportions above 20%. Those with the highest were NHS Corby (25.1%), NHS Blackpool (24.8%) and NHS Hull (23.1%).

In quarter 1 of 2019/20, 33 out of 191 CCGs met the new national ambition of 6% or less.

In the London NHS England region, 24 out of 32 CCGs achieved the national ambition.

Only 9 CCGs outside of London achieved the national ambition.
