Percentage known to be smokers by year

9.8% of pregnant women were known to be smokers at the time of delivery during quarter 1 of 2020-21.

This is a decrease from 10.5% in the previous quarter (quarter 4, 2019-20), and the lowest quarterly value since the collection began. 

The current national ambition is to achieve a level of 6% or less by 2022.


Percentage known to be smokers by Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG)

In quarter 1 of 2020-21, the lowest proportions of women known to be smokers at time of deivery were NHS Central London (Westminster) (3.0%), NHS Hammersmith and Fulham (2.8%), and NHS West London (2.7%).

5 CCGs had proportions above 18%. Those with the highest were NHS Blackpool (21.4%),  and NHS Hull (19.8%).

No data was received for NHS Calderdale CCG for quarter 1.

Percentage known to be smokers by Clinical Commissioning Group, compared with the national ambition

In quarter 1 of 2020-21, 23 out of 135 CCGs met the national ambition of 6% or less.

In the London NHS England region, it was achieved by 16 out of 18 CCGs, but only by 7 CCGs outside of London.

Note: No data was received for NHS Calderdale CCG for quarter 1.
