In its first iteration it presents the information previously published in these publications in the new format agreed as part of the consultation in early 2022.  The consultation outcomes document can be found below under Resources.

We plan to publish updated hospital admissions, mortality and prescribing data for 2020/21 through to 2022/23 later in 2023 with the publication then being produced routinely in the autumn each year.

Part 2: Other data sources


Drug use among adults

Drug misuse statistics  examines the extent and trends in illicit drug use among a sample of 16 to 59 year old residents in households in England and Wales. Data are from the Crime Survey for England and Wales.

Data on the prevalence and trends in drug misuse and in signs of dependence in the adult population of England is provided in the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey. The most recent survey was in 2014.

Alcohol and drug treatment statistics provide data on the numbers of people requiring treatment for drug misuse from PHE’s national drug treatment monitoring system (NDTMS). Data are provided separately for adults and prisons and secure settings.

The European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction provides an annual statistical bulletin containing the most recent available data on the drug situation in Europe provided by the Member States.


Drug use among young people

Data on drug use prevalence and consumption among young people is provided in Smoking, Drinking and Drug Use among Young People in England which contains results from a biennial survey of secondary school pupils in England in years 7 to 11 (mostly aged 11 to 15).

Alcohol and drug treatment statistics provide data on the numbers of young people requiring treatment for drug misuse from PHE’s national drug treatment monitoring system (NDTMS).


Drug seizures

Seizures of drugs in England and Wales statistics provide figures for seizures of drugs made by local police forces and the UK Border Force.
