Additional Disability

Approximately one in three on the register overall has an additional disability, broadly unchanged since the last collection. Additional disabilities were recorded for 42,135 clients on the register of blind people, and 42,315 people on the register of partially sighted people.

Of the disabilities registered, one quarter related to hearing whilst 63.9% related to physical disabilities. There is a hierarchy in place so that in the case of multiple disabilities, registrations are only counted once; recording of deafness or hard of hearing should be prioritised over the recording of mental health/learning/physical disabilities.

Full detail on additional disabilities can be found in Tables 3 and 4 of the reference data available. Some local authorities reported issues completing this data, details of which can be found in the accompanying Data Quality Summary.
