Summary
This is the most recent publication of provisional monthly HES (Hospital Episode Statistics) data for NHS Hospitals in England and activity performed in the Independent sector in England commissioned by English NHS.
A note on the publication dates for 2011/12: Provisional monthly HES publication dates will be based on the deadline for NHS trusts and similar health provider organisations to send data to the Secondary Uses Service. Normally, the publication will be 35 working days later than the deadline, unless the 8th working day is a Friday (in which case add 1 day) or the 35th working day is a Monday or the first day after a bank holiday (in which case add 1 day). Both of these exceptions can occur, so we always publish 35, 36, or 37 working days after the NHS submission date.
Highlights
In the year from May 2010 to April 2011 there were:
Inpatients:
17.2 million finished consultant episodes (FCEs), 58.5% (10.1 million) of which included at least one procedure or intervention, and 5.7 million of which were day cases.
14.8 million finished admission episodes (FAEs), of which 5.3 million were emergency admissions.
Outpatients:
87.2 million outpatient appointments made, with 69.6 million (79.8%) of these attended by the patient.
6.8 million outpatient appointments not attended by the patient, representing 7.8% of all appointments.
Accident and Emergency (Experimental Data):
16.3 million A&E attendances recorded in A&E HES. Of these 3.6 million (21.9%) resulted in admission to hospital for inpatient treatment, 3.1 million (18.9%) resulted in a GP follow up, and 6.3 million (38.5%) were discharged with no follow up.
Monthly topic of interest: hospital admissions caused by dogs, nonvenomous arthropods, reptiles and other mammals:
Bites, strikes and stings accounted for 12,409 finished admission episodes (FAEs) representing an increase of 9.6% on the previous 12 month period when there were 11,327 FAEs. Overall admissions increased 1.8% over the same period.
Being bitten or struck by a dog accounted for nearly half (6,118) of these FAEs.
Seasonal trend for FAEs during summer months especially where the cause of the admission was 'Bitten or stung by nonvenomous insect and other nonvenomous arthropods'.
