Summary

ISBN Reference: 1846360447

This report has information on staff employed by social services in English councils on 30 September 2005. It is broken down in a number of ways, including job role and ethnicity. It covers both childrens and adult services.

Please note that in translating their numbers of part time staff into whole time equivalents (WTEs), councils were asked to make the calculations on the basis of a staff contractual week. For any grade where the council does not have a standard working week, WTEs were calculated on the basis of 39 (contractual) hours per week for care assistants, manual and domestic staff and 37 hours per week (36 in London) for other staff.

Overall, there is still a high proportion of staff whose ethnic origin is unknown and so great caution must be exercised in interpreting the ethnic origin breakdown shown. Data by ethnic origin is only available in the statistical bulletin.

Data on percentages of staff in each council whose ethnic origin was not recorded is available in a spreadsheet below. Councils for which the percentage with ethnicity not recorded exceeds 10 per centwere invited to submit a revised return. Some councils did submit revised returns and a further spreadsheet has been added below.

2005

An SSDS001 return was received from all councils except Hackney. 2004 data has been used for Hackney. Overall, there is still a high proportion of staff whose ethnic origin is unknown and so great caution must, once again, be exercised in interpreting the ethnic origin breakdown shown. Data by ethnic origin is only available in the statistical bulletin. However, data on numbers of staff in each council working in adults' services, children's services and generic services and, of these, the numbers and percentages with ethnic origin not recorded is available in a spreadsheet below. Councils for which the percentage with ethnicity not recorded exceeds 10% were invited to submit a revised return in respect of 31 March by 30 April 2006. Some councils did submit revised returns and a further spreadsheet has been added below.
