Summary

The information in this bulletin, about immunisation statistics in England, comes from:

  1. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) Centre for Infections (CfI) for information on: Childhood immunisation uptake at ages 1, 2 and 5 collected through the Cover of Vaccination Evaluated Rapidly (COVER) data collection collected for PCTs, Persons aged 65 and over immunised against influenza for all PCTs
  2. The Information Centre (IC) collects information about the BCG programme and reinforcing doses on the KC50 return from known providers of immunisation services.

Highlights

  • Uptake of MMR vaccine by two years of age was estimated as 84 per cent and has increased across every region in England, although there are issues with missing data in the London region. This is an increase over the reported uptake of 81 per cent for the 2004-05 cohort. (1)
  • Uptake of vaccines by two years of age against diphtheria, tetanus, polio, pertussis, haemophilus influenzae type b and meningitis C was around 94 per cent, a slight increase to those reported for the 2004-05 cohort although this could partly be due to missing data for some London PCTs (1)
  • A decrease in BCG vaccinations from 628,300 in 2004-05 to 155,600 in 2005-06 due to changes to the BCG vaccination programme.
  • An increase in the number of people aged 65 and over immunised against influenza from 71 per cent in 2004-05 to 75 per cent in 2005-06

(1) Data on childhood immunisation should be treated with caution as small increases could be partly due to missing data in the London area where uptake rates are lower than elsewhere in the country. See section on Data Quality.
