Summary findings from MHSDS

MHSDS main findings

At the end of February 2021 (based on hospital spells data):

  • There were 3,190 people with learning disabilities and/ or autistic spectrum disorders (LDA) in hospital.
  • There were 995 admissions and 1,095 discharges. 86% of these were discharged back into the community.
  • There were 240,115 referrals for people with LDA.

Of these inpatients:

  • 1,235 (39%) had been in hospital for over 2 years.
  • There are 490 inpatients with a planned discharge date (15%).
  • 110 (3%) had a delayed discharge. 
  • The largest proportion (30%) were aged between 25-34 (945). 
  • The lowest proportion (4%) were aged 65 and over (145). 
  • 69% were male (2,210) and 30% were female (960). 

Findings based on ward stays data:

  • There were 3,165 ward stays reported for the end of the period.
  • The largest group of inpatients were in an adult mental health ward (1,410, 45%), followed by a learning disabilities ward (1,325, 42%).
  • 1,945 (62%) were in a non-secure setting. 1,135 (36%) were in a secure setting.
  • 475 (15%) travelled over 50km from home to get to the hospital for care or treatment.
  • 405 patients were restrained at least once.
