AT data tables - total length of stay

The Assuring Transformation (AT) data tables were updated due to an issue with historic length of stay data being incorrectly calculated in table 2.7 (now removed). This has been replaced with table 3.4 which contains the correct data. Figures for November 2021 were unaffected.

Summary findings from MHSDS

MHSDS main findings

At the end of September 2021 (based on hospital spells data):

  • There were 3,615 people with learning disabilities and/ or autistic spectrum disorders (LDA) in hospital.
  • There were 1,010 admissions and 1,125 discharges. 86% of these were discharged back into the community.
  • There were 271,895 referrals¹ for people with LDA.

Of these inpatients:

  • 1,395 (39%) had been in hospital for over 2 years.
  • There are 580 inpatients with a planned discharge date (16%).
  • 190 (5%) had a delayed discharge.
  • The largest proportion (31%) were aged between 25-34 (1,105).
  • The lowest proportion (4%) were aged 65 and over (145).
  • 69% were male (2,505) and 30% were female (1,100).

Findings based on ward stays data:

  • There were 3,410 ward stays reported for the end of the period.
  • The largest group of inpatients were in an adult mental health ward (1,505, 44%), followed by an learning disabilities ward (1,220, 36%).
  • 2,095 (61%) were in a non-secure setting. 1,205 (35%) were in a secure setting.
  • 550 (16%) travelled over 50km from home to get to the hospital for care or treatment.
  • 465 patients were restrained at least once.
