Summary findings from MHSDS

MHSDS main findings

At the end of January 2022 (based on hospital spells data):

  • There were 3,505 people with learning disabilities and/ or autistic spectrum disorders (LDA) in hospital.
  • There were 935 admissions and 1,025 discharges. 77% of these were discharged back into the community.
  • There were 294,460 referrals for people with LDA.

Of these inpatients:

  • 1,330 (38%) had been in hospital for over 2 years.
  • There are 625 inpatients with a planned discharge date (18%).
  • 220 (6%) had a delayed discharge.
  • The largest proportion (31%) were aged between 25-34 (1,085).
  • The lowest proportion (5%) were aged under 18 (160).
  • 68% were male (2,380) and 30% were female (1,075).

Findings based on ward stays data:

  • There were 3,390 ward stays reported for the end of the period.
  • The largest group of inpatients were in a adult mental health ward (1,530, 45%), followed by an learning disabilities ward (1,215, 36%).
  • 2,105 (62%) were in a non-secure setting. 1,165 (34%) were in a secure setting.
  • 525 (15%) travelled over 50km from home to get to the hospital for care or treatment.
  • 465 patients were restrained at least once.
