Summary
For the 1998/99 financial year, Hospital Episodes Statistics (HES) has collected nearly 12 million records detailing episodes of in-patient treatment delivered by NHS hospitals in England. This publication attempts to summarise the contents of HES and, hopefully, will serve to illustrate the richness of this unique data-source.
