Changes to the FGM Enhanced Dataset

During 2023/24 NHS England conducted a consultation on the FGM Enhanced Dataset to ensure that it is still fit for purpose, the key information is provided in a least burdensome and sensitive manner and improve the completeness and quality of the data. The consultation recommendations mean that there will be changes to the FGMED as shown in the updated Information Standard.

Changes will be seen in the publication outputs as follows:

  • From January to March (quarter 1) 2026 onwards, the nine discontinued data items will not be reported on.
  • From October to December (quarter 4) 2026, reports will include the new data item "What advice or information has the patient been offered?"

Summary

The Female Genital Mutilation Enhanced Dataset (FGMED) is a repository for data collected by healthcare providers in England where FGM was identified or a procedure for FGM was undertaken.

Data collected includes: FGM type, country of patient's birth and where FGM was undertaken, age at latest attendance, and if the patient was advised of the health implications and illegalities of FGM.

This publication provides a CSV (comma-separated values) file containing data from FGMED for the period January to March 2026. Information on the fields, geographies and definitions is provided in the CSV metadata.

The publication also includes the FGM dashboard. This tool allows users to analyse and visualise the data.

Key Facts

In the reporting period January to March 2026:

There were 2,335 individual attendances where FGM was identified.

Individual attendances count each patient. If the same patient had multiple attendances, they would only be counted once.

There was a total of 3,460 attendances.

Total attendances count each attendance, even if the same patient had multiple attendances.

There were 1,120 newly recorded attendances.

Newly recorded means that this is the first time the patient has appeared in FGMED. It does not indicate how recently their FGM was undertaken, nor does it mean that this is the patient’s first attendance for FGM.
