About this information standard
This information standard provides reference data about the Organisations that comprise the health and social care services, including non-direct-care Organisations, primarily in England but also in the other UK-constituent countries.
The current release, published on 8 March 2018, introduces a new delivery mechanism for weekly/daily updates of the reference data. Instead of data having to be obtained via NHS Digital's Technology Reference data Update Distribution (TRUD) service, an Application Programming Interface (API) has been developed to allow customers direct access to updates. This will go live by the end of April 2018.
This information standard is published under Section 250 of the Health and Social Care Act 2012. An Information Standards Notice (see below) provides an overview of scope and implementation timescales, and the Specification and Implementation Documents provide further detail for those who have to implement the information standard.
March 2020: Update: The Organisation Data Service has taken the decision to delay the introduction of the planned ANANA format organisation codes. This is intended to remove some non-critical activity from the system while it responds to COVID-19.
Implementing the new format remains essential due to the pending exhaustion of available codes within existing structures. However, the current rate of code usage means there are enough remaining codes for use for the time being. ODS recognise that considerable efforts have been made to prepare for the changes in time for 1 April. However, in light of the unprecedented pressures the NHS could face in coming weeks and months, it is felt that a delay is the only sensible approach.
The originally scheduled date of 1 April is therefore postponed until at least 1 September.
This revised date is provisional and will remain under review. Further updates will be released as we approach it. ODS remains available in the meantime to provide support and assistance to users in their preparations for the new code format.
