Mental Health Services Dataset – Data Quality Dashboard

An interactive report allowing you to explore the quality of data recorded in Mental Health Services Data Set (MHSDS).

This dashboard presents information about the quality of data submitted to MHSDS each month. This includes provider-level data quality information to help users understand the impact of local data quality issues.

The purpose of this report is to support data quality improvement by making this information available in an accessible and interactive format.

Suppression is used in both the dashboard and backing data to address data disclosure risk. For counts, values from 0 to 4 are suppressed and other values are rounded to nearest 5. Percentages are based on unrounded figures and rounded to the nearest whole number. Percentages are suppressed if either the numerator or denominator are suppressed.

This means that in smaller numbers there may be a high discrepancy between the published backing data and the percentages viewed in the dashboard.

Suppression is implemented in the dashboard after the user has made selections. This means that unsuppressed figures are added together and then suppressed afterwards. As such, there may also be a discrepancy between counts in the dashboards and counts in the published files. As summing two providers in the CSV will add two suppressed figures together, whereas in the dashboard the unsuppressed figures will be added and suppressed afterwards.

How to use this tool

Use the link above to access the interactive visualisations.

This tool is best viewed in full screen mode using the diagonal arrows in the bottom right of the visualisation.

To navigate through the tool, use the ‘Contents’ tab or use the arrows at the bottom of the screen.

To change the period shown in any time series view, select the required reporting period using either the slider bar or by left clicking on the date to bring up the calendar date selection.

To clear filtered results, hover your mouse underneath any filtered option heading to enable the ‘Clear selections’ eraser icon. Select this icon to clear previous selections and filtered results.

These statistics relate to complete calendar month reporting periods.

Although it is possible to select part-month start and end periods in these visualisations, the statistics are not provided at this level of detail.

What you can find out

  1. The data completion of all mandatory and required data items in the MHSDS for each provider/region, by month.
  2. The amount of data submitted to MHSDS with an invalid value for each provider/region, by month. Invalid values are codes entered which do not correspond to the national codes defined in the technical output specification.
  3. The number of submissions made to MHSDS where the code submitted corresponds to a value of 'Not known', 'Unknown', 'Not Stated' or 'Other' as per the national code definition in the technical output specification.

What the report cannot tell you

  1. Whether submissions to a specific field are appropriate or expected for a specific organisation.
  2. If data submitted to a free text field is valid.
  3. What invalid data is being submitted.

Notes and data sources

The MHSDS is a patient level, output based, secondary uses data set. It aims to deliver robust, comprehensive, nationally consistent and comparable person-based information for children, young people and adults who are in contact with services for mental health and wellbeing, learning disability, autism or other neurodevelopmental conditions.

Both the dashboard and source files will be updated on a monthly basis. The source files will be updated slightly after the dashboard, so there will be around a 24-hour delay from when the dashboard is updated to when the source files are updated.
