Prescribing data

Prescribing is the most common patient-level intervention in the NHS, and covers all sectors of care: primary, hospital, public and community health. It is the second highest area of spending in the NHS, after staffing costs.

Our prescribing team extracts and analyses prescribing data to identify trends and variation, and to support national policy. We produce reports and publications. We work closely with a range of organisations which have an interest in this information, including the NHS Business Services Authority, National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) and the Department of Health.

Medicines and Pregnancy Registry

We are working in partnership with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) to develop comprehensive national Medicines in Pregnancy Registries which can give a better understanding of the use, benefits, and risks of medicines taken in pregnancy.

NICE Technology Appraisals in the NHS in England (Innovation Scorecard)

The Innovation Scorecard reports on the use of medicines and medical technologies in the NHS in England, which have been positively appraised by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE). It can be used by local NHS organisations to monitor progress in implementing NICE Technology Appraisal (TA) recommendations.

Use of NICE-appraised medicines in the NHS in England

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) technology appraisal process assesses the clinical and cost effectiveness of new and existing drugs and treatments, and provides guidance on their use by the NHS between 2008 and 2012. This was an experimental publication.
